The Maxxis AT700 has secured top position for its all-round, on-and off-road performance in a pedigree field of seven, 17-inch tyre competitors in the 2019 4×4 Australia Tyre Test.
The tyres (including all-terrains from competitors Hankook, Nexen, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Goodyear and Falken) were fitted to an Isuzu D-Max LS-U and put through their paces at the Mount Cotton Training Centre in Queensland by former Australian Drivers’ Champion Paul Stokell and 4×4 Australia’s Justin Walker.
Tests included wet and dry braking, wet and dry cornering and a challenging off-road track of gravel, rocks and mud.
The vehicle’s stability control system was switched off during testing allowing the driver to judge the tyre’s grip limits without electronics kicking in, while latest technology and software was used to measure and analyse factors such as G-force and speed. The drivers did not know which tyre they were on during testing.
In its evaluation of the winning Maxxis AT700, which scored top marks in wet and dry cornering and the highest overall score, 4×4 Australia said that it was the tyre’s good or excellent performance over a range of disciplines that made it a winner in the test, and adding that it “lives up to the 4×4 expectations without overly compromising on road performance”.
The assessment also commented that while also performing in many cases above average, the Maxxis AT700 cemented itself as “an excellent multipurpose tyre, one that will get you to your off-road playground confidently and allow some exploration once there.”
The winning Maxxis tyre’s great value was the icing on the cake, with 4×4 Australia concluding its review by saying: “That it is competitively priced is a bonus for those looking for a great all-rounder.”
