As the cooler weather sets in, it’s yet another perfect opportunity to strap yourself in for some Great Australian Outdoors’ sights and scenery all from the comfort of your own vehicle. For this month’s Maxxis Man road trip, we’re setting off from Melbourne to Echuca – a three-hour drive (maybe slightly less) that will take you through some sweeping Victorian landscapes right to the banks of the mighty Murray River! Just a few hours from home, this destination makes it the perfect weekender (or mid-week) break – although I’m tipping you may well find yourself making a return visit as soon as you have a little more time!
How to get there…
This one’s a breeze when you’re travelling on Maxxis tyres! From Melbourne, head north for approximately 220km on the Calder Freeway/M79 or the Northern Highway – and follow the signs.
The best tyres for the ride…
It goes without saying that Maxxis has a perfect tyre for just about every vehicle and drive! If you’re in a Landcruiser or family-friendly SUV – a set of RAZR AT811’s will get you all set for adventure, both on-and-off the beaten track. Not to be outdone, if your vehicle’s something sporty – the VS5 is a top performer for any journey, with exceptional safety and comfort making sure your weekend is a winner from the get-go.
When in Echuca…
Echuca’s history and the great outdoors are magically entwined – with the Murray’s trademark paddlesteamers making their way serenely down the river, central to its allure. Get in the holiday mood with a sightseeing cruise, even book in for lunch or dinner aboard with plenty of water, wildlife and riverbank views.

Explore the river by kayak, paddle board or canoe…
The Murray is all about taking things at your own pace. With a choice of canoe trails and wetlands to explore, this the ideal way to watch the world (and the red gums that line the river banks) as you glide by. And if you don’t have your own canoe, no sweat! Outlets in and around the Port of Echuca offer various kinds of boats for hire.
Take a trip back in time at the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre …
Learn about the port’s history at this free museum, complete with reconstructed wharf, displays and knowledgeable staff keen to share the area’s past.

Slow down and watch the sunset from the river bank…
There’s not much that beats an Echuca sunset over the river, fishing rod at the ready as you try your hand at luring a Murray cod! It’s important to note (if you do plan to put your rod in the water) that you need a NSW Fishing licence, even when you’re on the Victorian side of the Murray.

You don’t have to be a Holden rev head to enjoy this…
When in Echuca the National Holden Motor Museum is an absolute must do! Showcasing “everything Holden” including about 50 original and restored vehicles from through the years, you can see one of the country’s largest collections all in one place.
Cellar door, brewery … and did someone say chocolate?
Well-known in the area, St Anne’s Vineyards brings its winery right into the heart of the port, with its inviting Echuca Cellar Door set up for wine tasting or just a stickybeak in any weather! Stop in at Bandicoot Brewing for some local craft brew made right on site — and if you’re checking out the shops, don’t miss out on a visit to Echuca Chocolate Company with its great variety of hand-made chocolates and chocolate liqueurs.
Where to stay…
With friendly hospitality, picture-perfect port, paddlesteamers and the Murray River as its backdrop – Echuca has all accommodation options covered — many complete with a view. From camping or glamping or spending the weekend in a little bit of luxury, there are holiday parks and cabins, motels, lodges and apartments just right for your style.

Before you go…
Load up your kayak and fishing rod and don’t forget a warm jacket which could come in handy in Echuca at this time of year. Then, all that’s left is for you to check those tyre pressures, buckle up and enjoy the ride!
