Maxxis Road Trip Sydney to Mudgee
The countdown to the year-end is well and truly upon us – complete with the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, jam-packed parking lots, the mad juggle of school and work events, plus all those other super stresses of the season such as working out how long it takes to cook a turkey! If this sounds a bit like your world, the great news is that with a good set of wheels at the ready (fitted with Maxxis tyres of course), you don’t have to go too far to enjoy a relaxing festive getaway that will have you in a real holiday mood with half the hassle!
Where are we going?
For this trip we’re heading to magnificent Mudgee. Deep in NSW wine country with all the views and rolling countryside to match, it’s just a three-and-a half-hour drive from Sydney on the Great Western and Castlereagh Highways. Derived from the Wiradjuri term, ‘Moothi’, meaning ‘nest in the hills’, Mudgee is a beautiful hideaway brimming with charm and hospitality, heritage buildings, galleries and wineries, a riverside sculpture walk, flourishing café culture and heaps more.
Best wheels and tyres for the ride…
Whether yours is a comfy SUV, a trendy convertible or a 4×4 with all the bells and whistles ready for adventure, getting to Mudgee on the main highways (most days) is easy as! If you’re planning to go somewhere a little off the beaten track, Mudgee can sometimes get a tad wet and muddy (like many places in NSW these past few months!) so you’ll need to make sure your vehicle is one with the right gear that’s up for the challenge. When it comes to tyres, there’s nothing to beat a set of Maxxis RAZR MT772s for second-to-none traction and puncture resistance with fabulous self-cleaning capability all in the mix. And if you haven’t tried them out already, the Maxxis RAZR AT811 is a winner on all-terrains, offering the perfect blend of on-and off-road performance and comfort that’s cutting-edge in every way!
The food, wine & honey…
Set in a historic wine growing area on the banks of the Cudgegong River, Mudgee and much of its amazing culture is centred around its magnificent landscapes, wines and local produce. With 35 cellar doors (and counting!) right on Mudgee’s doorstep, there are some spectacular views to be enjoyed as you taste!
Mudgee is renowned for its fruit and you can book in to “pick your own” farm fresh Christmas cherries at 10’s Estate Organic Orchard. When it comes to the eating scene, there is cuisine for every taste with local fresh produce and the work of award-winning chefs featuring highly on Mudgee’s menus. Make sure you have time to visit Mudgee Honey Haven to test and taste delicious Australian grown honey!

RV friendly town…
Magical on so many levels, the Mudgee region is very hospitable and welcomes recreational vehicles, motor homes and camper trailers making home-away-from-home super easy and convenient. Along with a number of camping and caravan sites allowing you to make the most of the great outdoors of the area, Mudgee has a wide range of heritage and country-inspired accommodation options from vineyard guest houses and farm stays to motels, resorts and self-catering apartments, with something just right for your stay!

4WD’ing fun…
If you’re looking for somewhere to put your rig and tyres truly to the test, Central West 4WD Park in Avisford (about 25 minutes from Mudgee), is a favourite with those in the know! It’s open on weekends for camping and 4WD’ing, but booking is essential for entry. It’s an expansive park (1500 acres to be exact!) with a diverse range of tracks and exciting terrains to conquer — with challenges for every level of 4×4 experience.
