Taking out 2nd place in the 2019 Cross Country Drivers Association (CCDA) series was the perfect finish to the year for the intrepid Road Runner Offroad team, with their Maxxis RAZRs performing impeccably on the track!
With the final “Goldrush” race for the year held on the rugged Bendigo track (and raising money for charities Beyond Blue and the Young Veterans Association), the Road Runner Offroads showed their RAZRs were up for the challenge, speeding past the competition to come second overall in the 4-heat race. After coming in 1st in the first two heats, a damaged bump stop slowed them down slightly in the 3rd and 4th – but despite the challenges, the RAZRs stood up to the test, showing their calibre all the way!
Road Runner Offroads’ team member Cam Stewart gave us the low-down of how the tyres gave the team the confidence to go all out in the race against 25 serious competitors vying for the series title:
“The track is loose gravel, hard packed clay moguls and bulldust sections. Initially testing at 26 psi tyre pressure we dropped the pressures to 21 psi to fully allow the tyre to grip in the loose volcanic gravel in the high-speed corners. At this pressure the tyres still provided amazing, predictable handling in the corners and stability in the high-speed straight sections (hitting around 120-130km/h down the back straight before braking hard to navigate a tight chicane). All the way, the RAZRs give us ample confidence to approach corners at speed, and control heavy braking with ease, in the loose deep bulldust they apply the power to the ground with minimal fuss.”
Cam added that the track and driving style is hard on tyres, with many competitors’ tyres (other brands of course!) suffering feathering and damage on the edges of the tread blocks from aggressive cornering and high engine power output.
“By the end of the event the RAZRs had some wear evident but no chipping or feathering of the tread blocks, and they fared extremely well even after completing another 10 race speed laps in 30+ degree heat on the Sunday.” … Go RAZRs we say!
Our hearty congrats to the Road Runner Offroad team – and all the best in your preparation for next year’s events!
